Gas Fireplace: My pilot light went out when I was vacuuming. Can I light it on my own?

No administering plate. There is simply an on off switch on the wall which I flip when I want the grate to turn on. I tried putting a match up to where the pilot flame used to be and nothing happened. I am appalled to flip the switch and then put a match up to the pilot. I think it may be dangerous that way.

Why Won't My Water Heater Pilot Light Stay Lit?

I have an AO Smith examination heater and the pilot suddenly won't stay lit.

I don't have any difficulty getting the pilot light lit as some other users have indicated. I can maintain the button down for a couple seconds and the pilot light stays lit. Then turn the dial to "Run" and pivot up the thermostat to a reasonable temp. Main burner comes on with no puzzler.

Then the pilot light goes out again. I've been through this like 4 or 5 times just today. I never have any problem getting the pilot light lit. I also tested to see if when the main burner goes off, maybe it creates a vacuum and blows the pilot trivial out, but it doesn't.

Again, it's an AO Smith and it's probably 4 years old.

Oh .. also, the whole area down where the heating atmosphere and thermocouple and all that is appears to be mostly "sealed." There's a small beaker window where you can look in and see the pilot light and burner and all that. There's a note on the side that talks about "If you agape the inner chamber you have to re-seal it with new gaskets" .. so I'm hoping that's a clutch of hooey or there's some solution that doesn't involve getting in there...

Would love some aid. Thanks!

Wall heater pilot won't stay lite after fire in fire place?

I have an older divider heater. I works just fine for the most part. Kicks on when its suppose to and the pilot never goes out, except every at the same time we have a fire in the fire place. When ever we have a fire, the pilot goes out. Then, once the fire has gone out for the evening or whatever, I go and light the pilot. I turn the dial to pilot, glare and hold the button. It takes about 30secs and it will stay lite. I hairpin bend up the thermostat and the heater fires up. It will burn for 5-15mins then everything goes out. I try to re-lite the pilot and it won't interrupt lit. Even after holding it for 2mins strait. I have to wait for about a 1/2hour then re-lite it again. Sometimes I have to do this whole activity over and over 3-5 times before it will stay on.

The house is older, wood paneling and drafty. Could a outline be causing the pilot to blow out in the first place? Why would it go out and not lite back up? Could there be a gas flow problem? I look over about someone having a similar problem and an answer suggested that there was a leak in the gas under consideration for, air and condensation getting in. Could this be it? How would I go about confirming this?

This is the only appliance that uses gas in the house (irrigate heater is even electric). We have had the rental company send out several abundant "repair" guys none of which really gave me any boldness as to what they knew or were doing. I feel I could repair it better if I knew more about the units. One guy replaced the thermo-coupler and adjusted the pilot itself. Another adjusted the gas drift, increasing it just a little, saying that would keep the pilot from going out. Another cleaned the whole item out with a vacuum and said "with confidence" that was the issue. He said the sensor that turns the entity off due to being too dirty was triggering. Well the unit is doing the same old thing now that it is clean.

This is starting to drive me nuts. The rental guests doesn't really care to do anything about it once they send out a repair guy. Any info would be greatly esteemed. Please don't reply saying "call a repair guy". I've had enough of them out here already. I deprivation someone to give me some suggestions of things that could be tried so I can in-turn suggest then to the rental party and go from there. Please let me know if you need any more info about this, thank you lots!
Thanks all for your posts, A-OK info I will have to check all these out. If I wasn't clear, there is no gas to the fire place, the only gas to the house is for the oven. However I suppose it could still be a gas pressure issue. I will try the window idea for, since its easy and unattached :) Any other thoughts? Thanks!

I diverge with the above answers, and there is a very easy way to determine whether I'm right or wrong. What I think is occurrence is when the fireplace is being used, it's sending between 4 and 5 HUNDRED cubic feet per minute (CFM's) up that duct!!!!! That same amount of CFM's has to enter the structure somewhere, and it sounds like it's being pulled in through your wood stove's exhaust vent or chimney !!!!!

You can determine if this is in fact the cause by absolutely opening a window in the room with the fireplace. That will allow the air to enter through the window rather than through the pipe of your heater.

Please let me know how you made out, and if I was right or wrong !!
